Arguably the oldest of all floor coverings, area rugs are always fresh and new. These days they are as much about style, art and fashion as they are about protecting floors and providing warmth and comfort underfoot. Rugs provide what is called "eye relief", offering interesting colors and textures while creating special-use spaces like conversation areas.

The true function of the area rug is fashion. They are colorful, patterned and intriguing. They soften the hard edges of ceramic, laminate, hardwood and vinyl floors. Today's trend among designers is to use the rug as a focal point or to make a personal fashion statement, even over wall-to-wall carpeting.

When decorating, think of your room in layers. For example, the floor may be hardwood or carpet, which frames the room. Adding an area rug adds another layer - floor art - and the furniture is layered on top of that. The rug provides additional color and depth, especially if the dominant rug color is repeated throughout the room.
